Built the shared primitives library and services behind several Optum operations apps

As a senior engineer at Optum from 2017 to 2025, Lucas helped build the shared UI primitives library and the microservices that several internal healthcare and pharmacy operations applications consumed, and shaped the user experience of the tools built on them.

The challenge

Several internal applications for healthcare and pharmacy operations were each solving the same problems: the same controls, the same layouts, the same backend capabilities, built slightly differently in every codebase. Business ideas arrived at a high level and had to become consistent, working software across all of them while the tools stayed in daily use.

Approach

  • Helped build a shared primitives library that several internal applications adopted, so common controls were designed and fixed once instead of in every codebase
  • Helped build the microservices those applications consumed as a shared layer, supplementing each product's own backend rather than replacing it
  • Served as the link between business stakeholders and engineering, turning high-level ideas into working screens and keeping cross-functional projects clear and moving
  • Introduced AI-assisted workflows to the team, bringing GitHub Copilot into both planning and development before it was standard practice
  • Mentored junior engineers and raised the floor in code review, documenting patterns so they stuck
